About Contra: Legacy of War
Released in 1996, Contra: Legacy of War brought the beloved retro series into the 3D gaming era for the first time. Developed by Appaloosa Interactive and published by Konami, this ambitious installment marked a departure from the classic 2D run-and-gun formula, plunging players into a world of three-dimensional environments and perspectives.
You join the elite Hard Corps unit, an eclectic team of skilled fighters including Ray Poward, Tasha, robot CD-288, and the alien ally Bubba as they face their toughest challenge yet. The mission: to stop Colonel Bassad, a dangerous dictator allied with alien forces to build a hybrid army of mutants, machines, and soldiers. The game’s gritty narrative unfolds across varied landscapes and hostile battlefields, featuring fast-paced action and challenging scenarios that are a hallmark of the Contra franchise.
While maintaining the adrenaline of its predecessors, Legacy of War’s full 3D visuals and dynamic camera angles offered players a fresh perspective on its frenetic combat.
How To Play
Contra: Legacy of War introduces players to an isometric 3D battlefield where strategy and reflexes are key. Choose from four unique Hard Corps operatives, each with different movement speeds and weapon capabilities, as you tackle levels packed with relentless enemies and environmental hazards.
The gameplay blends traditional Contra intensity with new mechanics suited for a 3D world. Levels alternate between advancing corridors and open arenas, requiring players to strafe, dodge, and maneuver creatively to survive waves of firepower. With enemies attacking from all angles — even airborne threats — the added dimension of space makes positioning and awareness crucial.
Players start armed with a machine gun and flamethrower, with opportunities to unlock character-specific gear and powerful weapon upgrades as the game progresses. Balancing your arsenal becomes essential, as heavy damage weapons are effective but require careful handling in the fast-moving environment.
While the classic Contra formula of challenging enemies and rapid-fire action remains intact, this installment allows for more tactical movement and pacing compared to the series' earlier entries. Whether navigating alien-infested jungles, dodging fire in ruined cities, or battling through futuristic warzones, Legacy of War delivers an exciting mix of retro action and early 3D exploration.
Contra: Legacy of War may not have rewritten the rules of the franchise, but it stands out as an ambitious step in Contra’s evolution, offering fans a glimpse into how its classic formula could adapt to new horizons.
